Songhoy researcher keynotes Nile Valley II in Atlanta

ATLANTA -- Dr. Hassimi O. Maiga keynotes the Nile Valley II Conference at Woodruff Library with a discussion of the significance of ancient manuscripts from West Africa.

Maiga discusses Mali Manuscripts and the potential and importance of the Gao Manuscripts, which are not yet in the spotlight. "The Gao Manuscripts are said to be older and more numerous than the manuscripts of Timbuktu. In terms of reflecting and conveying the intrinsic authenticity of indigenous African know‐how, wisdom, spirituality and culture, the Gao manuscripts are particular," according to Maiga, Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Bamako, Mali and vice president, The Academy for Diaspora Literacy.

The conference, at the Atlanta University Center Woodruff Library through Sept. 24, is dedicated to the late Dr. Asa Hilliard.
