NASHVILLE -- When Tennessee studied the challenges facing black businesses, the need for capital came through loud and clear -- leading to the creation of the Governor's Office of Diversity Business Enterprise and a targeted loan program.

When the program launched, three times as many applicants as expected applied.  Tennessee is rated fifth in the black business affinity scale in A Piece of the Pie: State of Black Business, eighth edition.

Detroit-based general contractor A&H Contractors took advantage of the climate through its Memphis office to score $17 million in federal construction work during 2010.

Turning the Hotel Lorraine, site of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., into the National Civil Rights Museum is one of the steps taken to promote cultural heritage tourism.
