ALBANY -- New York State was tied for the second friendliest state to black-owned businesses in A Piece of the Pie: State of Black Business, eighth edition.

The Empire State's 200,000 black ventures are more than ten percent of all the African-American enterprises nationally.

Although the 4,300 accomodation and food companies are most visible like Red Rooster or Sylvia's in Harlem or the Golden Krust Caribbean Bakeries franchises, the largest industry for black business in New York is health care with 46,000 ventures.

More than 37,000 firms fall into the other services category, with 23,000 in transportation.

The statutory authority for the state's affirmative procurement is one of the reasons for the high ranking. The Division of Minority and Women's Business Enterprise is located in the Empire State Development Corp., connected to the state's main economic development effort.
