During National Black Business Month in August, begin by making a commitment that you will prepare your own list to visit at least one black-owned business each day of the month because your traffic brings more revenue and sorely needed new jobs. We offer these suggestions for local options on the nationwide 31 Ways 31 Days list. Black Money Atlanta will provide check-in codes at some of the locations listed so new visitors can check in with their cell phones to register their support of black-owned businesses.

RICHMOND -- Virginia Dept. of Minority Business Enterprise tracks procurement online monthly, quarterly and annually in a transparent online database. Out of $3,605,105,742.28 in total spending so far in 2012 fiscal year, black-owned businesses have received $85.67 million.

THE VILLAGE OF HARLEM, NY -- The Honorable John C. Liu, Comptroller of the City of New York, is a featured speaker during the 50 Top Names in Black Food, the opening event of National Black Business Month, Wednesday, Aug. 1.
Liu, the chief fiscal officer of the nation's largest city, has undertaken a thorough review of City agencies’ performance under Local Law 129, specifically with regard to eliminating significant disparities in government contracting opportunities for minority- and women-owned business enterprises.

We traditionally begin National Black Business Month with a walking tour to sites associated with 1840s millionaire entrepreneur William Alexander Leidesdorff and the first African-American bank, created in 1857 at California and Montgomery in San Francisco. Alameda appraiser Al Watts gathered more than 25 hikers from All Seasons Ski Club who joined us Saturday for the three-hour tour, followed by a delicious brunch at Farmer Brown, the Food and Wine Top 10 restaurant devoted to the heritage of black agriculture founded by 50 Top Names in Black Food selectee Jay Foster.

HARRISBURG - Pennsylvania's Transportation Dept. reported 80 contracts worth $13.3 million to black-owned businesses during 2011, according to semi-annual reports filed with the U.S. Dept. of Transportation obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request from blackmoney.com
Pennsylvania ranked 16th among the states in utilization of black-owned businesses on projects funded with DOT grants to the states, according to Job Creation and Innovation: State of Black Business, ninth edition.
Across the country, 4,600 contracts were awarded to black-owned companies during 2011 worth $450 million, out of more than $40 billion spent using federal transportation dollars.
