WASHINGTON --Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in 19 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands will be able to strengthen their academic resources, financial management systems, endowment-building capacity, and physical plants as a result of a $227.9 million grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education.

SEATTLE --Washington's Transportation Dept. reported 48 contracts worth $4.7 million to black-owned businesses during 2011, according to semi-annual reports filed with the U.S. Dept. of Transportation obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request from blackmoney.com
Washington ranked 27th among the states in utilization of black-owned businesses on projects funded with DOT grants to the states, according to Job Creation and Innovation: State of Black Business, ninth edition.
Across the country, 4,600 contracts were awarded to black-owned companies during 2011 worth $450 million, out of more than $40 billion spent using federal transportation dollars.

Everyone who was anyone in jazz came through fabled Bop City, which Frank Sinatra called the "hippest after-hours joint in America." But the building was moved due to redevelopment from its original site at 1690 Post St. for the construction of the Japantown Peace Plaza. Due to advocates for preserving the historic Fillmore area such as Western Addition Community Organization, the building was moved to 1712 Fillmore Street, two blocks away, where it became the home of America's oldest bookstore, Marcus Books, now celebrating 52 years.
