PHILADELPHIA -- Rear Adm. John King told a group of teenagers the U.S. Navy would reach into their classrooms to prepare them for high technology careers, during a holiday party for the MESA program at Temple University.

Dr. Jamie Bracey of the College of Engineering  said the Philadelphia area program started with 40 students a year ago and expects to grow to 3,000 by next summer as part of a state-wide expansion.

King brought several officers who have served as instructors and curriculum developers in a cybersecurity sequence and a biomedical sequence for the students from more than a dozen Philadelphia area schools.

A Great Day in Gaming: From Queens to Silicon Valley: The Gerald A. Lawson Story was the featured film for the holiday gathering. Co-producer John William Templeton remarked that he had seen the historic landmark for the Benjamin Banneker Institute earlier in the day while researching the Underground Railroad.

That 1854 school had a focus on math and science, an indication of how early African-Americans saw the importance of those subjects.
