PHILADELPHIA-- No detail is too small for Keven Parker to find a distinctive dining experience at Ms. Tootsies Restaurant Bar and Grill at 1314 South St.

Uber-cool from the draped entrance to the hidden bathroom behind a wall of golden leather panels, it still gives the taste of someone's grandma making Thanksgiving dinner.

As I anticipated the crab and macaroni and cheese balls, there was a piping-hot surprise:a corn muffin with strawberry butter.  Then came the tropical tea, with a huge slice of watermelon atop.

The three crab and macaroni and cheese balls came on a rectangular plate which seemed designed just for the three hefty circles on lettuce.  They were more than most entree orders of crab cakes, and a fascinating variation on two familar tastes.

I'd ordered a meal too -- smothered pork chops with cabbage and stewed okra in tomatoes and corn.   The scintillating gravy covered two massive chops cooked to perfection; the cabbage had a smoked flavor which added a twist; and the okra blended well in the juices of the three vegetables.

Service was mellow and calm as if they were operating a food spa.

Ms. Tootsies is accessible on the SEPTA Blue Line at the South-Lombard stop, not far from the Penn Landing.
